Essay 3 (Ethnography)

Coaching on Game Day

Game day for Coach Adam and his peewee football team. On yet another gray overcast Saturday. Slowly one by one his players where dropped off at the Dartmouth high school, where the bus was waiting to take them to Somerset high school field. Coach Adam checking a list of his young energetic players arriving, before lugging their gear onto the school bus. As Adam does his last double checks his list, muttering to the bus driver he feels hopeful about “walking away with a win”.

After about half hour with the team getting restless, waiting to leave finally it was time to head out. All the young players were ecstatic, yelling and joking around with one another. Coach Adam sat up front looking over what appeared to be a binder with his plays, no saying much compared to all the boys causing a ruckus. A fifteen to twenty-minute ride felt even shorter. Watching some players listening to music with each other, playing games on there phones with one another. Not seeming to stress over the fact they were on their way to play a game.

Arriving at the field, Coach Adam announced to all the boys to put their phones away and look like they’re here to win a football game. As they started to tumble off the bus and started putting on their equipment. With a slight chill in the air, still an overcast day hearing the rustling of the fallen leaves blowing around on the pavement. Coach then instructs his team to do their warm up, which ranges from a light jog across the field or some relay running to get the heart pumping. Once they finished the players met over on the side line were most of them started stretching.

At this point I was on the bleachers, getting a good spot to view the game which was a good idea because they were filling in. Both with parents or family and fans of both teams. The food stand was open and serving hot drinks and snacks for everyone. Parents were trying to locate the player they came to see, looking at the big numbers on the jerseys. Patiently waiting for the referees to meet and get the game kicked off.

Coach Adam sent out his Quarter back out to meet with the refs and make the call for the coin toss. “Make the call for heads and if we get it defer the ball ok?” said Coach to his QB. That’s what the young, slim and lanky QB did and surprisingly got heads and deferred to kick off the ball to the opposing team. (Meaning to start the game Coach Adam’s team was going to kick the ball to the opposite team and get it back after half time.) So Adam’s sends out his kicking team yelling “hustle, let’s go! Make some hits”. Finally, the game was on its way.

Watching a live Football game can be more exciting then just sitting on your couch at home watch the game on T.V. Hearing the fans cheer, with the rumble of the steel bleachers as fans bang their feet. Even the game commentator’s voice over the P.A system announcing the play by play action echoing across the field. Surprisingly still being able to barely make out Coach Adam yelling from the sideline, making last minute changes to the plays.

After a few halves it was half time, the wind was starting to really pick up. Giving everyone red rosy cheeks, some brought blankets to buddle up with. The players though now huddle up on the side line looked as if it was a hot August day drenched in sweat, with bright red faces. Players were rehydrating and some chowed down on light snacks. With their Coach going over what they need to work on for the last half of the game. Telling his defense “you guys need to just keep putting pressure on them”. After, Adam’s sent his receiving team get out on the field.

During the last half it looked as if Coach Adam had accomplished what he wanted to for the game. Holding the other team to just seven point, while being on top with ten. Adam’s though still yelling barley hearing what he was saying with winds picking up, and his voice almost gone from all his encouragement from the sideline just wanted to hold the lead and kill the clock. Managing the clock seemed to be something he knew how to do, by just having his offence run out the clock without making any risky plays to jeopardize the lead.

The Parents and fans started to pack up their belongings, not want to be sitting in the cold a minute more then they had to. As some helped load the bus to head back to the drop off site. Asking Coach Adam if he was happy with how the game unfolded. He said “Yes, I’m always happy to walk away with a win, more important is that the team worked like a well-oiled machine and that’s why we practice to have good games like this”.

Being able to view Coach Adam’s day in the life of a coach I can see how he’s faced with lots of responsibility and if all goes well mostly ends with a win. No matter what the elements of weather bring he’s always there with his team pushing them, to do their best. I can see why Adam is the head Coach of the team, I don’t think he will be going anywhere anytime soon with the organization skill he has to lead a young team still being molded.

peer review (essay 2)

Noah’s essay is a well rounded. He did a good job with quoting key points in the article. The author and title along with a good summarizing of the article. I think he could have went into more dept when it came to the main characters intertwine and their connections. Also how the NFL felt about the accusations. Other then that i feel it was a great essay on the topic with just a few grammar issues.

How One Lawyer’s Crusade Could Change Football Forever

In this article Michael Sokolove fights to connect serious head injuries to the sport. Jason luckasevic was studying to pass the bar exam, which he passed on the first try. Not long after passing he was hired right out of school. By 2000 a Pittsburgh firm hired him. “lawyering for the working people”, was the ambition of Goldberg, Perksy and white. This was a new firm Luckasevic had joined to move on up and start making big bucks.

Luckasevic’s older brother Todd was working in a medical examiner office, under Bennet Omalu a forensic Pathologist. Omalu performed autopsy on former football player Mike Webster, who had passed away at the age of fifty suffering from dementia. While reviewing MR. Webster brain he noted damage similar to what boxers suffer “drunk punch” syndrome. Five more cases over a few years with similar conditions. Tangled brain tissue and sharing characteristics of Alzheimer Disease.

By 2005, Omalu published his findings in the Journal of Neurosurgery. He stated seeing chronic tramatic encephalopathy, or C.T.E. This is when the NFL responded with affiliated doctors demanded Mr. Omalu retract his article. NFL said “ preposterous and misinterpretation of facts”. At this point Omalu seeked to get some legal help from Todd’s younger brother Jason Luckasevic.

Luckasevic had met with retired NFL players in 2006. Witch those players confirmed Omalu’s studies when looking at the brain tissue under a microscope. Luckasevic witnessed the suffering ranging from headaches, memory loss, depression and sleeplessness. Building a case against the NFL takes gaining the trust of those retired players, who were the victims. Luckasevic said  “they have to feel they have a friendship with you before there’s a business relationship,” Luckasevic said. “They have to have your cellphone number. They’ll keep calling and calling and calling until they get you, and you’ll have a conversation, and then they’ll call you back an hour later and ask the same questions and have the same conversation. This is a clear sign of having some extensive brain damage, without doing any testing.

It seemed that the NFL is losing the fight to deny C.T.E claims or its link to brain damage amongst players and retied ones. Other then changing rules to make football less violent and improving equipment. There will always be injuries but its about helping the players who have these conditions and finding ways to fix the problem not deny and act like its not happening. The NFL needs to admit there wrong and help save the lives of these players.

Myself as a writer.

Myself as a writer, I feel i am the type of writer who is skilled to be able to explain real life situations. Weather they have happened to me or someone I know. Although i know i can improve and would like to this semester. Also learn the proper grammar and punctuation, when to use and how it should be. I always expressed myself through drawings and art growing up. I am hoping to be able to transfer my expressions from art to witting and expand my skills.

I’ve never been a writer other then when i had to in school. Most of the time I didn’t enjoy it, it really depended on the subject at hand. There was one time where in school we had a project to write a small book. I chose to write it about my Dad and his love for drag racing. It was an assignment that really interested me and needless to say I gave it to my Dad who still has it to this day.

Writing I feel is a valuable assets to have, weather for job necessities or just being able to have the skill. I myself don’t see myself using it in my career and i haven’t really in passed employment. I see it as being able to show art just in a different form. I look forward to making the transition from typical drawing art to writing art and painting a picture with words.

“Peer Review”

Upon reading Bobby Memoir, I sensed an similarity to me own. I feel that the way he grabs your attention with starting with a date. Also the placement of each part has a big factor in explaining his personal view of his memoir.I find his is easy to read and stay along with how the events take place. By having parts he can reference back to as he continues to move forward but still provide details using flash backs.

No “I” in Team.

Back in the summer of 2010, in Cocoa Florida were i was living at the time. I joined my local county’s football team. It was always a boy hood dream, and football was one way my Father and I bonded. Growing up I always wanted the traditional Father son relationship. Now being on a team, I felt like we both made the team.

Practice was not something I was prepared for in the slightest. August, is around the time we started and in Florida, it is very humid and dry witch wasn’t bad if you stayed hydrated.  Although when it rained the practices where just an hour and half of being eaten by mosquitoes. I feel that those were the worst practices, mud everywhere and getting attacked by mosquitoes. So when it was just battle the heat those days where a walk in the park.

Something I picked up on fairly quickly was you ability to play didn’t necessarily mean you got a lot of field time.It was in fact who your coach was and if his son played on the team, most of the coach’s had the sons playing the whole game. That was the case with our team. Didn’t matter how much effort you put in at practice or just didn’t seem like it.Id barley get feild time, finnally i said something to the head coach. I asked him if i could get more time playing and why his son was playing the whole game. He didnt like that, and told me to try harder and not to question him.

Then on one Saturday morning, we were playing a double header. I had no idea it would be a day i will always remember. The superstar aka the coaches sons made a critical mistake when hiking the ball from the center, and fumbled it.Luckily i was on the field when it happened and put all the skills from practice into recovering the ball.Doing a “bear Crawl” where you’re on all fours I was able to recover the all stars fumble and get our team the ball back. After i walk over the the side line my team charring that we didn’t lose the ball and was a big play in a game we won.

From that day on, my head coach viewed me as a more valuable assets to the team. Witch may not be the best way of coaching a team but,it sure did make me try and earn my moment. He learned what I was capable of doing under pressure.Made me think that in life actions do speak louder then words.

Memoir; sample readings

This memoir   (Sharing Secrets) Talks about how she went to an all girls summer camp, for the first time. At first she wasn’t to excited about it but after spending time and getting comfortable ,and making friends with other girls. After getting acquainted with the girls there she learned about their lives. She soon realized that others had more deep and personal issues they worked out with each other. Now she attends Camp Seafarer every summer, to come together and hear their stories and offer support, and just have a great time.

I Choose this memoir because I strongly connect with this. Growing up I never stayed in one area for more then three and half years. My family was always moving I had been to seven different schools before I entered High-school. Many where in Massachusetts, and one big move to Florida. After a few times I started to become very excluded and shy especially as I grew older. When I moved to Florida though is where I made life long friends to witch I still am in touch with to this day. Now we are like a long distance family, wishing each other great holidays and birthdays, even meeting up when I go back down or when they come up for vacations.

The universal significance of this memoir, to me is being able to be in a uncomfortable and unknowing situation and making the most out of it.Going into camp she didn’t have any friends there, only after meeting girls and making connections did she start to enjoy it. That’s why I feel this memoir fits me all to well, knowing the struggles of feeling alone, only to gain some great people as friends for life.

Four sentences and a scene

My hometown is a quaint and peaceful. A ma and pa town where everyone knows everyone and is a fantastic place to grow up.

Laci style depicted her way of life and it was far from the average person who tends to blend in. She is the type to not blend-in rather she is loud and proud.

Mr. Brown was by no means teacher of the year, failing to connect with any of his students.

The room seemed to suck the life from people who entered, as a student would feel about detention.

As the sun rises piercing through the blinds. He rolls over, only to his dismay of the alarm going off and its time to start his day. He rolls over to kiss his wife and then hops out of bed. Then makes his way to the brewing pot of coffee. Now passing through the kitchen his two furry pets come rushing in to greet him as if its been days since they’ve seen him.So he finishes pouring his cup and turns to let his pups outside. Before going to put on the, old suit and tie he preps the dogs food and calls them back in. With the dogs eating and him finishing up putting on his shoes,he then makes sure his wife.As he makes his way out the door she comes rushing out to give him one last hug and makes sure he takes the lunch she made for him,and sends him on his way with a kiss.
